About the Company

Company Description

C. Bonner & Son Ltd is a family run knitwear manufacturing business established in 1976 by Cornelius and Bernadette Bonner. It sells worldwide through small retailers, mail order companies and designer brands, with 90% of sales exported from Ireland selling to the UK, Europe, Japan and the USA. They also have a retail outlet in Ardara, Co. Donegal supplying products mainly for the tourist market. Employing the best master crafts people in Donegal - the company produces the highest quality knitwear in traditional yarns, structures and colours reflective of the Donegal landscape.

Project Description

This project will design and develop a range of new products in knitwear with a diverse set of gauges. (Gauges are the number of needles per inch/cm, the greater the number of needles to the inch the finer the gauge of the knitted fabric and the fewer needles to the inch, the chunkier or heavier the fabric). The company delivers a range of products to a number of brands internationally with the product design being dictated by the customers. However, this project would provide the opportunity for Bonners to create their own brand identity. Using a range of gauges to create product and test the market will enable them to grow their export market and online provision. This will be achieved by entering new menswear, womenswear, childrenswear or interior markets, with their own unique brand identity alongside the knitwear created for their current retail outlets. Therefore a key purpose of the project is to bring the design function in-house in addition to broadening their manufacturing expertise.
